The Alliance for Global Clinical Training (AGCT) is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the safety and quality of surgical care in developing countries. Established in 2012, AGCT focuses on collaborative educational experiences by pairing skilled volunteer surgeons with local clinicians.
Since its inception, AGCT has partnered with the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) and Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. MUHAS stands as the largest teaching institution in sub-Saharan Africa, while MNH, a 1,500-bed hospital, serves over 5 million people in Dar es Salaam and surrounding regions, acting as the major referral center for the entire country.
AGCT volunteers have collectively spent two years at MUHAS/MNH, introducing tools and techniques that expand surgical capacity and improve patient outcomes. This collaboration is particularly impactful in Tanzania, which has only 0.3 surgeons per 100,000 population, compared to 7 surgeons per 100,000 in the United States.
The success of AGCT’s initiatives is exemplified by testimonials from local clinicians. Dr. Ali Mwanga, a senior physician at MUHAS/MNH, noted significant improvements in knowledge and skills resulting from AGCT’s training and mentorship programs. He emphasized the ongoing need for such training to continue advancing surgical care in the region.
AGCT’s impact is also evident in patient outcomes. For instance, Mrs. Edna Mwakisale, a 33-year-old single mother, underwent successful surgery by AGCT-trained surgeons to remove a large pelvic tumor, preserving normal bowel function. This operation enabled her to look forward to returning to work and supporting her family.
Through its commitment to education and collaboration, AGCT continues to play a vital role in improving surgical care in developing countries, directly benefiting both healthcare providers and patients.
